Eye Movement Desensitization
and Reprocessing is a technique first developed in the
late 1980's by Maxine Shapiro. It is a researched,
effective technique most often used for the healing of
trauma. Traumatic memories are stored in fragments
in the brain in a way that makes it difficult for the conscious
mind and body to fully access and integrate them, creating
uncomfortable symptoms and the feeling that what happened
in the past is actually happening here and now. EMDR
helps to unlock the mechanism that keeps them "stuck" in
the unconscious and allows for healthy processing, allowing
those traumatic memories to remain where they belong – in
the past, thus unburdening the client and allowing for
current daily life to be lived more fully.
